Frequently Asked Questions
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
How much does spray foam insulation cost in Hutchinson?
HomeGuide's 2026 national range is $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed. Small jobs often hit a $1,000 to $2,000+ minimum. We measure and give you a written price.
Is spray foam worth it for a pole barn?
If you want to heat or cool the building, or stop condensation dripping off the steel, closed-cell foam is the common choice. For cold storage that only needs to stay dry, a thinner layer may do.
What R-value should my attic have?
ENERGY STAR suggests R-60 for an uninsulated attic in Zone 4A, or adding R-49 over 3 to 4 inches. Kansas has no statewide residential energy code, so check local rules for new work.
Can you spray foam in winter?
In a heated basement, yes. Unheated buildings and attics depend on temperature, because foam has minimum surface and air temperatures. We schedule around the weather.
What is cheaper, spray foam or blown-in?
Blown-in costs less per square foot: HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.80. Foam also seals air, which is why it costs more. On an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value.
Does foam help in a storm shelter or basement?
Foam on basement walls and the rim joist insulates and seals the basement. It is not a structural or storm-safety product.
Spray Foam Insulation Questions
Closed cell or open cell for my basement?
Closed cell. Basement walls are cool and can be damp, and closed-cell foam slows vapor.
How long do I stay out after spraying?
HomeGuide advises 24 hours or more while it cures.
Does foam need to be covered?
In living spaces it generally needs a thermal barrier such as drywall. Attics, crawl spaces and shops depend on use; we explain before quoting.
Can you foam new construction?
Yes, after rough-in inspections and before drywall.
Pole Barn & Ag Building Insulation Questions
Will foam stop my pole barn from dripping?
Yes. Closed-cell foam keeps moist air off the steel so condensation cannot form.
How thick should the foam be?
It depends on whether you heat or cool the building. We size it to your use.
Can you foam a Quonset building?
Yes. Foam follows the curve.
Can you spray in winter?
When temperatures allow, or after heating the building.
Attic Air Sealing & Insulation Questions
How much attic insulation do I need in Hutchinson?
ENERGY STAR suggests R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 4A attic, or adding R-49 over 3 to 4 inches.
Will it help in summer?
Yes. Sealing and depth cut the heat that comes down from a hot attic.
Foam or blown-in?
On an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value. Foam fits tight spaces and roof decks.
What about vermiculite?
Do not disturb it. It should be tested; if it contains asbestos, removal is for an abatement contractor.
Basement & Crawl Space Insulation Questions
Is the rim joist worth doing alone?
Yes. It leaks a lot of air for its size.
Can you foam a block foundation?
Yes, if it is dry.
Do I need a vapor barrier over closed-cell?
Usually not; closed-cell at typical thickness acts as its own vapor retarder.
Can you do this in winter?
Yes, a heated basement is easy to spray year round.
Blown-In Insulation Questions
Blown-in or spray foam for my attic?
For an open attic floor, sealing plus blown-in is usually the better value.
How much does blown-in cost?
HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.80 per square foot and $900 to $3,600 for an attic.
Can walls be filled without opening them?
Yes, with dense-pack cellulose.
Does it settle?
Some; we install to account for it.
Old Insulation Removal Questions
Do I need to remove old insulation?
Only if it is wet, soiled, moldy, failed or hiding leaks that need sealing.
How much does removal cost?
HomeAdvisor lists $1 to $2 per square foot and $600 to $1,200 typical.
Is foam removal expensive?
It is slower; HomeGuide lists $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot.
Where does it go?
It is bagged and hauled away.
