When Loose Fill Is the Better Buy
Blown-in insulation is usually the most cost-effective way to insulate an open attic floor. Cellulose or fiberglass is blown through a hose into an even layer that fills around joists and wiring. In older Hutchinson houses with hollow walls, dense-packed cellulose can also fill the walls without tearing them open.
Materials
HomeGuide lists blown fiberglass at R-2.2 to R-2.9 per inch and cellulose at R-3.1 to R-3.8. Fixr puts fiberglass at $1.65 to $2.60 per square foot and cellulose at $1.75 to $3.80.
Seal first
Loose fill does not stop air. We seal bypasses and the hatch first.
Depth
ENERGY STAR suggests R-60 for an uninsulated Zone 4A attic or R-49 added over 3 to 4 inches. Depth markers stay in the attic.
Dense-pack walls
HomeGuide lists dense-pack cellulose at $1.60 to $4.20 per square foot. We drill small holes, fill each cavity and patch.
Older homes
Older frame houses in Hutchinson and the railroad towns often have walls with little or nothing in them. Dense-pack is the practical way to fill them.
Over ductwork
Where ducts run across the attic floor, sealing their joints and then burying them in loose fill reduces summer heat gain and winter heat loss. We look at the duct layout first.
Settling and depth
Loose fill settles a little over time. We install to the settled depth needed for your target R-value and leave rulers in the attic so you can check.
Comparing quotes
Ask each insulation company for material, inches installed and target R-value in writing.
